i havce a server from my dads work and it wont network to
my home network which is on XPpro, can anyone help
Jorj,
Does the server connect to your LAN?
From each computer (XP Pro and NT):
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / failure of each of 10 pings.
Can you see the shares on the server? Start - Run - \\server?
Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on both computers?
If the server was a domain member at work, you'll have to login locally and
setup an account for local access. Making it a member of your local workgroup
(you do have a workgroup right?) will make it easier to find on the network, but
won't solve this problem by itself.
Make sure the browser service is running. Control Panel - Administrative Tools
- Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is started.
Check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options - View -
Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro to NT, you'll have to
disable SFS.
With SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".
If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.
Any firewalls (ICF or third party) on either computer? Configure the firewalls
to allow file and printer sharing by opening the following ports: TCP 139, 445;
UDP 137, 138, 445.
Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
