I apologize for re-posting this - for some reason it doesn't show up on my
machine as posted. I have had this problem in the past. I am using
"msnews.microsoft.com" as my news account. Any suggestions on this problem
appreciated too.

Now to the original post - I hope this one shows up so I can see the answers
to my situation that doesn't allow me to see the posts/answers :)

I am getting a new Dell computer w/XP home installed. As I mentioned a while
ago here, I want to upgrade Home to Pro with the Pro upgrade CD I bought. My
current machine will no longer be in use so I will not be violating any
rules.

It was suggested in this group that I do a clean install of Pro and remove
the junk Dell puts on the machine, I agree with this suggestion and plan to
do so. I have already downloaded SP2 to a CD to install and will immediately
go to the Windows Update site and get'm all.

I believe the new Dell comes with all the back up re-install stuff already
on the HD - pretty sure I am not getting a Home CD. I have no idea where on
the HD all this 'back up' will be stored and am curious if formatting the
drive and doing a clean install will wipe it out.

Anybody know?
Any other suggestions appreciated

FYI - I don't have the patience to build my own - have had good luck with
Dell in the past - that's why :)

TIA

You're using Outlook Express? Go to Tools | Options, and on the
Read tab, uncheck "Get xxxx headers at a time."

Although I seldom an in favor of doing a clean installation, this
is one situation where I agree. With a new machine, you will no
investment in having set up the machine the way you want it,
getting rid oftha junk is a good idea, and a clean installation
shouldn't take long.

My experience with Dell recently is that supply everything on CD,
including a Windows installation CD. But to be sure, and to find
out what if anything may be stored in a hidden partition and if
so how to access it, you should ask Dell.

I am using OE 6 and the 'get XXX headers at a time' is unchecked - and has
been
obviously the second pst showed up

"Also check your settings at OE View > Current view."
it is now SHOW ALL MESSAGES and GROUP MESSAGES BY CONVERSATION

thanks for the help here

Often times, computer manufacturers will make a second partition with
diagnostic utilities and other things like that. When you reformat, you will
want to delete all of the partitions, and then install XP on "free space".
Formatting will delete all of this stuff.

How are you going to reinstall XP Home if they won't send you a disk? If
you just have a Home->Pro upgrade disk, it requires home to be installed
first, and you cannot go straight from nothing to Pro. It is possible that
if you format your drive that Dell has the setup files installed on your
drive already, and you cannot build a fresh Home install without those
files???

XP home does not have to be installed on a pc to use the pro upgrade to do a
clean install. There really is no Home->Pro upgrade disk. There is XP pro
full version or XP pro upgrade. He would however require one of the install
cd's of any of the qualifying previous versions such as 98, ME, W2K, XP
Home, etc.

Dell has taken a page from HP's cheap procedures. You no longer get an XP
disk. You have to burn a restore disk from a option in the Start - All
Programs menu. You only get one go at it too.

No, that is incorrect. You can burn one disc and immediately copy it as many
times as you want if it's not copy-protected.
