XP to 98

This newsgroup is here to help people use XP. XP goes wrong for a reason. It
doesn't do it by itself. Most posts here are to do with human error or 3rd
party software/drivers etc. MS 'spew' out the fixes mainly due to
hackers/virus creators making peoples lives hell, so MS has to patch things
up.

I can think of quite a few reasons. For instance if you have a program that
wants direct access to the hardware XP won't let it. :(

Neither would any version of NT, or Windows 2000.
That "little" limitation broke my GSR monitor, my high sensitivity
thermometer, my weather station .... blah blah, the list goes on. (Even my
doom game)!

You should always check compatibility before major upgrades. The Upgrade
Advisor (on the CD and available as a download) would likely have caught
these. Do the manufacturers not have XP or NT compatible versions?
Besides, if XP is so excellent then why is this newsgroup full of problems
here ?

Because it's a support area. Why are mechanic's garages full of
malfunctioning cars? Why are hostpitals full of sick people? Those are
the same questions.
Why do updates spew out of microsoft ?

To fix the problems.

In any case, the point of a computer is to run applications and do work, not
to run an OS. If the apps you need won't run on XP, use an OS that will.

Just my 2c worth.

I have a 98se and an XP system. I like them both as they both have always
been stable as hell.

The reason you say Microsoft keeps pumping out the updates is that
everything Microsoft makes becomes a hackers target. People try day
and night to find holes in it's products and Microsoft keeps updating
the security. Netscape and Opera for example are not prone to the hack
attempts as Microsoft is. Just my two cents worth.
