My XP startup is taking way too long.

20 seconds.

Nothing in event viewer or windows log files.

Automatic updates is disabled.

Anything else to check ?

Thanks,
Andy

Instrumentation readout, in the form of BootVis, is
available. Microsoft stopped supporting it. I was
able to test it on my WinXP SP3 machine, and it
seemed to work fine here. It creates a trace of
OS activity during boot.

This is my collection of random links.

I did a backup before installing it, because..

Sounds scary.

Do you use a disk image or is there something easier ?

My C: is only 20GB, and I use Macrium Reflect Free to
back it up.

When I make suggestions like this, it's to encourage people
to make backups. And, also, to estimate their own risk or
comfort factor with software. There are plenty of lesser solutions,
but then, they require research. Like, say you break your
registry. System Restore keeps copies for you, if you
have System Restore turned on. But you don't have to "learn
anything", if you have a working backup system.

I keep the content of C: relatively small, to make
the backup run faster.

I (and my blind friends) would be delighted with a 20 second startup!

I think 20 seconds from a power off state to a stable desktop is pretty
good! I don't think mine is quite that fast!

I think the record is 18 seconds.

I only mention that, so Andy will tear his hair out,
trying to shave off the 2 seconds :-)

Actually, if you're into beating the record, whatever
it is, start with a motherboard with an Insyde BIOS.
Those POST really fast, and will help your stats.
My Asus motherboard (in this machine), wastes a lot
of time in POST.

Be nice.

Do not read any further.

My normal bootup time is around 15 seconds.

I subscribe to a lot of newsgroups and Andy is a known troll.
I suggest ignoring the clown.

Bootvis is showing pssnap.sys is taking 12 seconds which seem like a long time for a driver to load.
