I have a new system that came with XP installed. When I power up I get to
the Desktop and it also has a open window called System 32 with a list of
files. It says not to delete or modify them. I close the window and all is
well. How do I stop this window from opening on start up???

from your info can not tell full path of file being opened
best chance start pc and write name of file being open
EG c:\windows\system32 and look for it in msconfig so it
can be unticked

try going to START>RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP
and look in the list for some thing like
C:\windows\system32\explore.exe and untick the box next
to it.

I had the same problem. There apparently is some small
syntax error in a line of the registry.

If you go to http://www.kellys-korner-
xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and navigate to line 260 on that
site, you will find a small program file at "System32
Folder Opens Upon Boot" to run that fixes the problem.
It worked just fine for me.

I had the identical problem. Dell Support email sent me to
a site where the problem was described with three
solutions. The one I tried was to create a new user
profile. This worked. However, now I have new problems
with not being able to open attachments in email, not being
able to "save image as," and not being able to download
files. The other solutions listed involved changing the
registry and reinstalling XP. Good luck. My system is
still messed up.

I have exactly the same problem--has anyone answered you
yet?? I did a search and yours is the only one that
matches my problem.

From one of MVP Kelly Theriot's past posts:

"This is a known issue for owners of an SB Audigy 2 sound card. Re-enable
the item in MSConfig.

Then see www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 260, Left column for a
small utility that will correct this for you. The problem is caused by a
leading space before the /L:ENG. This causes the problem, the script
corrects it.

If this is not the case, see:

System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086"
