Anyone care to comment on this new SNAFU???
http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1368

Microsoft has decided not to release Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 to
Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center as planned on April 29. The
reason? A last-minute compatibility issue with a Microsoft application -
Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS).

The main thing I'd like to stress from that article, is the advice not to
download via shortcuts that point directly to the executable--such as the
one the Jack Ass posted in these groups.

I've done this, myself--in fact, I used his link to apply SP3 to the last
machine I work closely with that didn't have it on already.

However, it is very risky to click on a link leading directly to an
executable, or even an unknown web site, in a post in a public forum.

Microsoft's advice, as relayed in the article, is to use the web links so
that a) you are assured you are getting the bits directly from Microsoft,
and b) you have the benefit of the information posted on those web pages
about the download--it isn't all fluff or legalese or promotional
material--there are technical issues that matter that may be important to
read about first.

The short cut I posted points directly to MS website. Also, the "bug" which
MS is worried about is not going to affect 99.9999% of global users of
Windows XP. The bug is about Microsoft Dynamics RMS and I bet considering
the size of your brain, you won't know what this product is all about!!

The MS link is once again here:

<http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe>

It is a long link but I did not want to snip it for complete clarity of what
the link is all about!!

I agree that your link points directly to Microsoft, and is, in that sense,
"safe."

(or I would not have used it myself.)

I'm not sure how you are guessing about how many readers here are using
Microsoft's relatively new business management and accounting packages, but
I'd prefer not to guess at that, but to accept Microsoft's guideance about
how best to download their products.

These groups are read by large numbers of folks, compared to those posting,
and it is better to be conservative and exemplary, if possible, in choosing
what to post.
