After installing SP2, IE launches extremely slowly and does same in browsing
in moving from one request to another. Oddly enough, the SBC DSL browser
(also based on IE) runs well enough. System Idle Process is continually
around 98%. Have run AVG anti-virus and SpySweeper without change in
behavior.

Anyone else run into this?

Break out a dictionary and look up the word "idle," sometime. ;-}
The "System Idle Process" metric is the amount/percentage of time that
your CPU has nothing to do. A reading of 98-99% is generally
considered a good thing, and readings above 90% are normal. Think of
it like a car's engine idling in your driveway before you place the
car in gear.

As Homer would say, "Doh!"

Ok, that explains idle. But why then has IE gone all wonky and arthritic.
It takes forever to start and forever to do anything, and I only have one
forever to my name. Let me know if you have any ideas on that.

Thanks

You really haven't provided enough information to tell what else might
be wrong. Are all of the configuration and security settings for the
generic IE the same as the settings for the branded version your ISP
provided? Has your ISP configured their servers to provide quicker
responses to their branded browser, as opposed to one not customized by
them?

What do your system event logs report? What changes, if any, did you
make to the computer's hardware or software configuration immediately
prior to the onset of the problem? What specific troubleshooting steps
have you already taken, and what were the results of each?

It could be that the installation of the ISP's branded browser
(something that no reputable company ever need do) has corrupted some
essential system files. You might try this, to see if it helps:
