XP SP2 slow boot problem fixed, but....

I googled a fix for XP slow bootup after installing SP2. The problem seems
to be the new DEP (Data Execution Prevention).
By editing the boo.ini file of DEP from "OptIn" to "AlwaysOff", it makes
this feature unavailable, but solves the slow boot
problem. Since this feature is supposed to enhance security of the computer,
the question is, how much risk am I assuming by
disabling DEP?

Now that I'm satisfied that the long boot times are associated with SP2 and
not a hardware or other installed software problem, I
could live with it if it was significant in enhancing the security of the
computer. If not, I'll leave it off.

Thanks,
Fitz

Why not turn it back on and go download BootVis? It helps the boot problem.
Also, you might check the HD for errors and defrag it to help. Get rid of
junk on the machine as well.

Why not simply get yourself a decent 3rd party firewall?

Hi,

I had the same problem TOO After Installing SP2. You can see the details:

You can also find this in this News Group using Subject of POST "Problem
with XP + SP2 - Just 3 days BACK."

I have tried all the Options But could not solve - then Did a Clean Install
with SP1 Slipstreamed. (Said GOOD BYE to SP2) Now it is Cool - Boots Just in
10 Sec MAX.
