I have a freeze problem on boot-up either at the Windows XP window or Welcome
window.
I turn off power, reboot and this may or may not be successfull when
choosing the normal startup procedure in the abnormal shutdown window. I
have also tried using the last good configuration operation and this was not
successful.
Is there a procedure to repair corrupted files or registry problems? Any
other ideas?
Thanks,

Does it start ok in safe mode? Reboot and as the BIOS screen disappears
repeatedly tap the F8 key. That will bring up the Advanced Options
menu. Choose safe mode. If it boots ok in safe mode it means something
loading in normal mode is a causing the problem.

Do some clean boot troubleshooting to see what is causing the problem:

Have you done a thorough scan for malware using a current anti-virus
program with the most recent definitions and used a combination of
anti-spyware programs, all updated, and all cans for malware done in
safe mode?

I picked up on the System File Checker in one of the references you
mentioned. I tried running sfc /Scannow and I get a window labeled "Windows
File Protection" stating that files are required for the DLL Cache. It asks
for the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM be inserted. When I insert my MS XP
Home CD, it says it is the wrong CD. Does it want either the SP1 or SP2
update?
Thanks,

Have encountered identical problem today (1 DE) after being forced into
a format 3 weeks ago. Have tried the Dell-provided XP Home with SP1a CD
and the MS-provided SP2 update CD both with same result and without
getting anywhere with SFC.
Only can see the exchange below and am not privy to "these ideas" from
Rock.
Rock: Would appreciate the info so I can run the checker.
Thanks in advance.

Still stuck at the starting line. Found an item about SFC that discusses
taking a file I386 and adding it to the computer. Am reluctant to try
that based on my 'novice' tech level and for fear of messing up.
Planorez: Would you provide the "ideas" you refer to in the exchange
below (apparently items were provided by Rock)?
Thanks
