XP SP2 Jerky after fresh fdisk/install

Hi All,

I googled for this, but it's hard to nail down good search terms.

I had a working XP system, but I always do a full reinstall of windows
every year or so.

I fdisked, formatted, and installed XP SP2 from scratch without changing my
hardware.

Suddenly everything is jerky:
About once a second my mouse and keyboard both pause then continue.
AVI's (played through DivX or WMP) play in a jumpy manner.

Everything else is fine.

I reinstalled all the same drivers. When that didn't fix things, I upped to
all the latest drivers... still nothing.

There's no spikes in usage in the task manager and I'm using about 200 megs
of my 1 gig of ram.
It's a 3 gig hyperthread CPU with GeForce 3 for video and SB Live 5.1 for
sound.

Any ideas?

Apply Windows Critical Updates, install and update antivirus and
antispyware programs and scan for viruses/malware.

I installed Norton AV 2005, all the windows updates, and the chipset
drivers, but I do worry about the motherboard.

Soyo never really seemed to keep up much with this board (dragon 2
platinum). I never could find a good monitoring package on their site,
and the last 2 bios releases kept my ide drive from booting (had to roll
back to older version).

I still think It's XP SP2 since nothing changed in the hardware between
my old install (last night) and my new install (today).

I would go to the chipset manufacturer e.g Intel, VIA, SIS etc. and get the
latest drivers from their site. It sounds like it could also be the video
card or IDE driver. Did you have SP2 on the old install?

Good idea.

I just downloaded the intel chipset drivers. I'll give them a try when
I go home.

There don't seem to be any independent IDE drivers.

I have the latest video card drivers.
I didn't have SP2 before, just SP1 with all the fixin's.

Ah well. Nothing worked, so I did the only thing left.
I reinstalled.

It all works now, possibly because of a bad BIOS flash prior to the
previous install?

Those sort of mouse- and keystroke-delaying pauses are usually from
deep down at the hardware driver level:
- HD retries: HD activity LED stays lit throughout the pause
- LAN retries: Exclude by setting LAN card to "disabled" in DevMan
- other periperals: Try unplugging all USB devices etc.

The other possibility is malware or other software messups, though
these don't usually cause the mouse pointer to stop moving.

If the delay is from hardware other than the CPU, you may not see CPU
maxed out - it may be idling, waiting for the hardware.

Do you have adverse mileage that prompts you blow your PC's head off
every year? There may be an underlying cause for that, such as a sick
HD that is now more obtrusively dying.

Glad you got it going. Sometimes it's quicker and easier just to reinstall.
