XP SP2 install

I get the message "setup could not verify the integrity
of the file UPDATE.INF. Make sure the cryptographic
service is running on this computer." when trying to
install SP2 to a Windows XP Professional installation.
Any ideas on how to get past this and get the machine
going again. It has had a lot of trouble with
adware/spyware and has been scanned with Symantec
AntiVirus and reports clean.
