If I install a beta copy of XP SP2 what happens when the
official version is released?

Do I have to uninstall the beta version, or will I be
able to install the official release over the top of it?

Appreciate any advice, as I can get a legal copy of the
beta release, but I am concerned about how to apply the
official release when its ready.

Thanks

First Golden Rule of Beta Releases: - *NEVER* install on your main system -
it could be very costly (in time) if it goes pear-shaped. Beta releases are
guaranteed to contain numerous bugs and any ono of them could turn out to be
quite nasty. Always have a separate system (or a partition of your main one)
for beta purposes.

It is to easy to install and un-install , I have tried the latest 2055 works
ok, Like the popup stopper. It does seem to be slower opening web pages
though, Maybe the new firewall or the popup blocker.

David,

First, the XP SP2 betas are available only for MSDN subscribers and Beta Testers. Secondly, do not install it in production environment. The final version will be a re-coded one and you will have to uninstall [generally] before updating to the Final Release.

Beta versions of Service Packs always must be uninstalled prior to
installing the final released version. A prudent person would not
install a beta version of a service pack on a critical computer used
everyday. Sometimes it's necessary to completely reformat the hard
drive in order to remove a beta service pack.

You have nothing to gain, and everything to lose, by experimenting
with beta service packs on a computer you use everyday. Wait until
the released version becomes available later this year.

I found mine on the Internet. So they must be available to more than just a few of the chosen ones.

Hi, That's would not be considered a "legal" download. Nor is it "illegal".
But you don't get any support with it.

If you are not a registered beta tester - don't. If you are, have a
cloned image copy of the present production system before installing
and go back to another copy of that when the final one comes out
