XP SP2 and W2K Dual Boot

I have a dual boot XP / 2000 system that had been running
well for years. I just loaded XP SP2 for testing (since
all my apps run under 2000 I figured I could lose XP
without too much heartache.) XP is running fine, but I
cannot boot into 2000 anymore!

I get the error:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or corrupt

I had been using 2000 up to about an hour before booting
into XP and installing SP 2, so I don't think the 2000
system hive is too large. I am not using McAfee for
Exchange. (These seem to be the only relevant KB articles
out there).

Does anyone else dual boot with XP SP2?
Does anyone know if SP 2 replaced NTLDR with a version
incompatible with 2000?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Not really a fix but you could boot into XP and uninstall SP2...

Thanks for the reply.

Of the three listed causes in 822705, I think I can rule
out Power Failure-it shutdown normally like any other
day; File corruption and Faulty Hardware-when I boot into
XP everything checks out fine (disk is fine, no Event log
errors, memory check runs fine, etc.); Registry Written
to at Shutdown-not sure how to check this since I can no
longer boot into 2000! I had not seen any errors prior to
this occurrence and the Event Log was always clean.

2000 had all Windows Updates applied for quite some time
(I had checked again that afternoon and found nothing
new).

Under XP, I loaded all the updates (including the new
Windows Update) and rebooted a couple of times before
downloading and running SP2.

After XP SP2, I booted a couple of times into XP to check
for any further updates, etc. The first time I tried
2000, I got the error.

I was hesitant to try to repair the 2000 from CD before
asking for help because I wanted to see if there were any
known XP SP2 issues. I can't stress enough that the only
changes to my system were the updates while booted in XP.
I have my MCSA/MCSE in Windows 2000 and
design/implement/maintain/support the LAN/WAN and about
70 PCs for my company. Unlike many shy users with PC
problems, I'm not kidding when I say I didn't do anything
else!

I guess my next question is "What is the best way to
recover 2000 from here without killing XP?"

I made a backup of the XP partition a few days before the
XP Updates, but I wasn't planning on killing 2000! I
know, I know, I should have done both OS, but who knew?

Other notes: my system is a Dell Inspiron 8200 2.0 GHz
with 1GB RAM and three NTFS partitions (the first with
XP, the second with 2000, and a third for Data). I keep
Norton Internet Security updated under each OS (and they
were current within two days) I have not had any viruses
or, believe it or not, any spyware (so far anyway).

Thanks again for your post and any other suggestions!

I might have to do that! I was hoping it would be easier
somehow - yeah I know I was dreaming!

I remember the conflicts with the versions of NTLDR and
related boot files when I setup the dual boot. XP was on
first (came with the laptop) and I added 2000 then had
to 'fix' the boot files for XP. I had researched it
beforehand so I wasn't caught by surprise. That is why I
wondered if SP2 replaced those with ones no longer
compatible with 2000.

By the way, for anyone else reading these, it is XP Pro.
If anyone is curious, I also had a 2000 server running on
a modular drive for a while and could Triple Boot!

Thanks again!

Narc?s

Hi,

I have the same problem. I have a machine with 3 ntfs partitions first
with Win 2003 Enterprise Edition, second with Windows Longhorn Beta
and the third with Win XP SP2.

The problems came when I created the xp partition for SP2 testing.
After having installed all fine I cannot boot with 2003 that's my
working environment. When booting the dual boot menu option appear but
if I select any option different than XP the machine reboots and I can
not boot any OS but XP.

I have tried fixmbr but without success. Any ideas?

Regards,
Narcís.
