Hi. Will the XP SP2 come with Sun's Java? Didn't the
recent dispute with Sun get resolved and Microsoft now
hjas to included Java with Windows and not their own
version? Thanks, Craig.

Yeah, and for every Coke you buy they have to give you a Pepsi!

The point is Sun java is effectively a competitor of Microsoft.
With "Set program access and defaults" added with SP 1, you can easily
select from installed Java applications.
I very much doubt Microsoft would have to include a competing product
any more than Coke will give you a Pepsi as a bonus for buying Coke.

Craig,
Microsoft is not required to ship Sun's Java Virtual Machine with Windows.
So far, the public previews of SP2 have not included Sun's JVM, so chances
are pretty good that the release version won't either.

Microsoft never *has* to include any specific feature or function in
their products. They guage what the markets wants and decides if THEY
want to include it. If they wanted, they could toss out EFS, NTFS, zip
folders, Movie Maker, Windows Media Player, sound recorder, Solitaire,
NT Backup, Disk Cleanup, Paint, and much more. You decide if the
operating system satifies your needs for however you will use it. If
the OS doesn't provide all the features you want then you decide if 3rd
party software will suffice. You decide if the platform (i.e., hardware
and OS) will meet your criteria for the applications you want or are
critical. And if that platform doesn't meet your needs then you see if
some other platform will work.

Microsoft used to include their MSJVM. They lost the lawsuit. Under
specific configurations they can continue to include or update the MSJVM
but it all evaporates eventually. Otherwise, you go to whatever vendor
provides a JVM for your platform. For Windows, you will most likely get
Sun's JVM. Microsoft does not have to provide you with a replacement
for their JVM. Microsoft doesn't have to provide you anything from a
3rd party software vendor, especially a competitor. Otherwise,
Microsoft would also have to include a copy of Linux and other
Intel-compatible operating systems with each purchase of Windows, a copy
of VMware with a purchase of its Virtual PC, and a copy of OpenOffice
and WordPerfect with their Word program. Not going to happen.

If your configuration of Windows XP does not include MSJVM, no further
update or service pack will add it. You need to get one from someone
else, probably from http://java.sun.com/, but there are others, like
Jikes, http://orp.sourceforge.net/, and maybe more.

Microsoft may not provide their own Java engine (or not until they have
brought it into conformity of the standard as laid down by Sun, but
AFAIK they have no obligation, or intention, to supply Sun's software
