XP SP1 / SP2 Workgroup Problems

Hello,
I have been looking around forums and have found similar but no definitive
solutions to my following problem:
I have a 3 machine wireless workgroup at home connected by a 3com wireless
router, all do not use windows to configure the network and have no personal
firewall or antivirus installed. The windows firewall is also not applied.
1 machine has XP pro SP1 while the other 2 have SP2. When all the machines
are on, I can access my workgroup and visualize all machines without error.
Yet when and only when the machine with XP SP1 is connected. Otherwise I
arrive to visualize the workgroup but am denied access when I click to see
the machines. The odd thing is I still have access to the shared folders
through the my network voices.
Fundamentally the network functions, but direct access through the workgroup
voice
is denied when the XP SP1 machine is absent!
Is there any fix for this?

Voices? I find this very difficult to follow. But try:

1. Disconnect the XP SP1 machine.

2. On the other two computers go to Administrative Tools/Services. Locate
the Computer Browser service.

3. On one machine set the service to Automatic start. On the other set it
to Manual.

4. Reboot both machines.

On each computer:

1. Bring up the list of system services (Start | Run | services.msc)
and make sure that the Computer Browser service is started and is
configured to start automatically.

2. Run the registry editor (Start | Run | regedit) and open this key:

HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA

If the value of RestrictAnonymous is not set to 0, set it to 0 and
reboot.

Brilliant that worked great! Thanks.
Is there any reason as to why the XP SP1 computer was bypassing and allowing
access for all stations to the workgroup while the SP2 were denied if SP1 was
disconnected?
Thanks again.

You're welcome!
Is there any reason as to why the XP SP1 computer was bypassing and allowing
access for all stations to the workgroup while the SP2 were denied if SP1 was
disconnected?
Thanks again.

I suspect that one or both of the settings that I listed were wrong on
the SP2 computers, for reasons that I don't know.

The Computer Browser service enables a computer to be the browse
master for the network, keeping a list of workgroups and computers and
making the list available to other computers.

An incorrect value for RestrictAnonymous on one computer prevents the
other computers from getting a list of the first computer's shared
resources.

HI Steve,

I have a similar problem with different systems. I have a ME, XP home and
XP Pro. When I first set the network up, I had the ME and XP Home
systems. The master browser in on the ME system. As long as that is up I
can see the the workgroup systems on all systems. If ME is down I cannot
see the workgroup on any of the XP systems.

I made one of the XP system automatic the other manual. Both have
RestrictAnonymous set to 0. I stll cannot get the workgroup if the ME
system is down!

There is another key RestrictAnonymossam to set 1.

All help will be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,
Joe O
