XP SP1 downloads?

Why did Microsoft remove Windows XP SP1 and all security updates, etc.
from the Windows Update web site?

I had do a system restore on two Windows XP systems and now I cannot
install all previously available updates from Windows XP SP1. When I go
to the Windows Update web site:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

I click on the 'Custom Install' option because I do not want to Express
Install anything in Windows XP, that sounds dangerous, but I do know
what it does.

When I click on the Custom Install link, it scans for updates or
something, and shows Windows Update with a 'Download and Install Now'
button. Since I have no idea what 'Download and Install Now' does or
actually installs, I click on the button and hope nothing bad happens.
I see 1% displays and shows ERROR.

What does this ERROR mean? If Microsoft would provide more information
in their error messages other than ERROR, it may be helpful. However,
that may be asking too much from a mult-billion monoculture monopolistic
business.

I do not want to install XP SP2 on these system due to some software
that I need to use will not work with XP SP2.

You can get sp1a here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp1.html
Or search google, it's everywhere.

What program do you have that won't work with sp2? I don't know any that
absolutely will not work. Maybe some need a tweak or patch or the firewall
needs to be setup right, but I haven't heard of anything just out and out
not working.

These XP systems do already have SP1 on them. I just need to download
all the Post SP1 fixes. I know there are many of them and I cannot find
them.

If a Windows user does not want to install SP2, why force it? Microsoft
is now forcing users to install SP2 and that does not sound right to me.
SP2 provides very little additional security and XP SP1 with all fixes
installed ran fine for me.

This seems like Microsoft is now labeling their own software as
Forceware and naming itself Microforcesoft.

Tried that. The V5 web site loads.

If I can find a Windows 2000 CD somewhere, I will use it. This XP
problem is not worth it.

I hope some organization and/or company sues Microsoft for this because
it has caused me lots of trouble and wasted time. I do not have all day
and all night for weeks to fix Microsoft's screw ups. The only thing
that Microsoft does is raise my blood pressure very high and prevents me
from being product in my work (business work).

I copied and pasted the URL in Mozilla Navigator and the web page shows:

Mark. If you open the Custom Install page, below where
the SP2 install now button scroll down and there should
be another section that says Review other updates. You
might check and see if that helps.

From your past posts I see you are using Windows Update
Version 5. When you click on the Custom install button,
v5 searches for available updates. I thought you said
that you get the update option for XP2. On the right of
the box for that update is a scroll bar that if you slide
the bar down, at the bottom, of the XP2 update box should
be another section for Review & install other updates.
The discription below that line reads "If you do not
install Windows XP Service Pack #2, other updates might
still apply to your computer." I would think that would
apply to SP1, but I am not a "MVP" so I could be wrong.
Anyway if you click on the Review other update botton,
update searches for those updates. At the end of the
search a "Review High Priorty Updates" should appear.
Check and see if any of those update are what you want.
If this does not work or dose not give you a resolution
to your issue, please post again as someone more
experienced surely will have the answer.

Review other updates? I do not see that and unsure how reviewing
updates will help me.

I would be surprised if any Mozilla variant works with Windows Update. The
link works very well with IE.

Windows update is designed to "only" work with IE version 5.X or
higher.

Windows update doesn't work with netscape/mozilla. IE is needed.
