John

I have been using a beta of SP2 for 4 months now. I
installed SP2 RC2 today, all kinds of problems so I
uninstalled it. Now SP1 install says
C:/windows/system32/drivers/atapi.exe is in use. After
that I cant do anything else but exit. Anyone ever run
into this?

Let's see if we've deciphered this correctly?

Some 4 months ago, you have WinXP SP1 and installed SP2 RC1 (Beta
Release Candidate 1). Now you've installed here lately SP2 RC2 (Beta
Release Candidate 2). You had problems with SP2 RC2, so you
uninstalled SP2 RC2 - putting you back to SP2 RC1.
So what does SP1 have to do with it? Are you trying to get back
there (SP1). Unless you uninstalled SP2 RC1 before installing SP2
RC2, you won't be able to uninstall SP1 RC1 without a reinstall of
Windows (clean or repair) and reinstalling SP1 with all appropriate
hotfixes.
Either way, if you are trying to install SP1 with either SP2 RC1
or RC2 installed, you can't, that's considered a downgrade and you can
only downgrade by uninstalling (not sure about SP2 uninstall features
as it is still BETA) or starting a fresh.

When you uninstall SP2 RC2 it downgrades to pre SP1. So
I cant even install SP1 now. Same error message.

Hi

This error message can be caused by virtual drives software.

If you are using any virtual drives, for example Daemon Tools or
Alcohol's virtual drive, then you must disable them, and in the case
of Daemon Tools uninstall the program.

Alternatively, try to rename the file before (or while) you
install the service pack:

When the installation complains about Atapi.sys and asks you to
"Retry" or "Cancel", simply go to Windows/System32/Drivers and
rename Atapi.sys to whatever. Then go back to the installation
and select "Retry" - the installation should then complete.

Daemon Tools was the first thing that came to mind. I
did uninstall it, but it didnt fix the problem. I will
try the renaming suggestion next. Thanks
