XP slow to start after login (not a software/spyware/virus)

Pilou

Hello,

I think my problem occurs after SP3 installation but I'm not sure.

I have no antivirus or firewall which often cause problems, more than
virus. I don't have virus, spyware etc. For sure. I use Litestep, but
problems is also here with explorer shell.

AFter having entered my login and password, XP Pro starts, it looks like
it were functional: nothing launches at start except Ms Services (I also
have my nvidia drivers, Process explorer, autohotkey, but I disabled
them in msconfig to test the difference).

Everything looks functional, but in fact, during one minutes, I can see
in process explorer that some MS services are not launched, and
therefore, some softwares can not work (foobar2000 for example, but
there's a lot).

In fact, some MS services starts one minute later, and then, computer is
functional. So, *does anyone know why some services lauche only after
one minute ?* Hardware is not the guilty, it's recent, and more, I've
reproduces this problem on another PC... Event Viewer shows nothing. I
don't think anybody could resolve the problem except he had himself.

I think I won't be the only one. I hope I'll have a solution to offer
one day... Because it will show up again after format, I'm pretty sure I
have it before my last install...

Sorry for all this text.

Pilou: I don't brush or floss "which often cause problems." Can you just
help me with this sore tooth?

Dentist: Good luck to you.

You absolutely should run an antivirus and malware program. Regarding your
statement "...I've reproduces this problem on another PC...." does not
"compute" - if the statement is factual you have the cause in hand!

You will find me pretentious, but I know I don't have virus or malware.
Even if I had a doubt, I can look at hijackthis log to verify by myself.

No, I can't uninstall SP3; I suppose on my last install, it was integrated.

I think my problem is due to a service which is not able to start, but I
don't know the reason. Maybe a service prevent others to start (IpV6
helper for example, even if I don't think so).

At first, I though it was RPC which didn't start, but I can see it with
process explorer. I think it will be very hard to resolve this...

You can do the following in Safe Mode (if you download the applications
first
anyway.) You may want to do it this way, just to be sure you don't have
anything resident.

First - remove SP3 - you can do this in safe mode in various ways - but you
may just want to use System Restore back to a time before installing SP3.

Next - despite your confidence - scan for current malware...

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (seperately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely - you can remove them afterwards
if you like.

After that - I suggest booting normally if you are in safe mode...

If you are able to boot normally - perform the following steps:

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just ONE of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it. If offered SP3, install other updates
first.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try it again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. The
Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against
the Windows Search one. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware
updates.

Once you get that done - still no SP3 - update all your hardware drivers and
check your motherboard manufacturer's web page for any BIOS updates.

Then perform a CHKDSK on your C drive. Will have to be done with a reboot
in order for CHKDSK to get the access it needs.

Then perform a Disk Cleanup... Delete all but the latest restore point using
Disk Cleanup. You may even want to use CCleaner to cleanup some other
temporaruy and unnecessary files.

Then perform a defragmentation on your hard disk drive.

Now - it's time for SP3...

Suggestions:

1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO download to
CD.
2) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
3) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
4) Disable any antivirus and antispyware applications when you are about to
install SP3.

Some (if not all) of that is covered in the above links.

Hopefully that will get your machine cleaned up and working well.

Come back - let everyone know!
