XP Shutdown freeze

Maybe 1 time in 10, I click the Shutdown button last thing at night, XP gets
to the final shutdown screen, drive activity stops and that's it, machine
locks up still on. It's done it on & off since first installed some months
back. Apart from that XP is super-stable, no drive errors next startup.

Google just shows the problem's not unknown, eg some Creative drivers can
cause it, but no other clues that seem to apply in this case. As said, it
only happens occasionally and at the very final screen after everything's
been saved and the power should be cut off.

Board is Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, FX5200 graphics, on-board Soundstorm audio,
latest BIOS and drivers everywhere, XP Home SP2.

Anybody else come across this and found a solution?

i have an epox 8KHA+ and a PNY 5200FX video card and have a similar problem.
with SP1 i can shutdown normally, but with SP2 i can't even restart when i
boot from th SP2 CD and try to install windows. we have the 5200 video csaard
in common, i wonder if it may have something to do with it.
