I have Dell Inspiron E1505, 1GB RAM, 80 GB HD, updated to SP3.
I originally used Internet Explorer 6 to register on half a dozen
hobby forums in 2006, then soon upgraded to IE7 but about 6 months
later I begin to find it impossible to login to any of these forums
after literally over 1500 times among them all. I sell items of
interest to the members of these forums so I actively participate in
on-going discussions.

After about 6 months of easy access, I began to experience login
problems which take the following nature:
The sites accept my user name and password, thank me for logging in
and then proceed to take me back to the login in screens again and
show my status as not logged in or invalid login. I have tolerated
this situation since Netscape worked and allowed me access to all my
forums but Netscape is no longer supported. I want full function from
whichever browser i choose to use.

I stopped using Internet Explorer and began using Netscape. No
problems logging in to any sites' forum.
Netscape is being phased out and I downloaded Mozilla FireFox-No joy,
same problems.
Then I tried Opera, same results.
All these browsers are fully functional in every other way I expect a
browser to work. No problems performing searches, customizing home
pages and etc.
They just don't work with the web site forums I frequent when it comes
to login.
I am able to login from other PC's using the same ISP using Internet
Explorer, Opera and FireFox so it would seem there is a setting(s) or
something I am overlooking confined to my PC. Windows Internet
security settings are at the med zone, as recommended by Windows. I
have tried making each browser my default browser in hopes that would
make them as functional as Netscape to no avail.
I use AVAST! Home paid version, SpyNo More paid, AdAware SE paid,
SuperAnti SpyWare free and Windows Defender. I have cleared caches,
cookies and all but the kitchen sink so many times I can't begin to
count. I do routine disc clean up and defrag about once a month.

Does anyone think they see a fixable cause to my browser to forums
login problem? I appreciate suggestions over and above clearing
cookies and caches I have already heard a lotof time but neve made any
difference.

Which was installed first, IE7 or WinXP SP3?

Did this behavior first start after you'd installed WinXP SP3?

=> Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

1. Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons;
or

2. Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No add-ons).

=> Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Advanced settings (RIES)?

Try booting the computer into the safe mode and see if the problem still
exists.

Try starting Firefox while the computer is still in safe mode and see how it
functions.

You might also want to try booting Firefox itself into it's own safe mode,
Start/Mozilla Firefox/Mozilla Firefox (Firefox Safe) and see if that works
any better. If the Firefox Safe mode makes things work something has been
added to Firefox that is affecting the connections.

Try turning off the firewall and or anti-virus and see if that makes them
start working again.

Can you ping the affected sites from a "Command Prompt" window? If not then
I would suspect something has modified your "hosts" file or registry to
block them. If the site your trying to reach has an entry going to
127.0.0.1 remove the entire entry and see if that helps.

Check the registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\. If the site you are trying to
reach is listed here then it's being blocked by a program like Spybot or
some other program that added the entry to the registry. After backing up
the registry you can try deleting the entry and see if the computer can then
reach the site after a reboot.
