Cleaning up a DELL Dimension 4550 for a friend. Piles of Trojans and a couple
of viruses. Got it clean. Did all outstanding updates then tried to Install
SP2. The Install fails and says something like 'can't backup (or access) the
file .dvr-ms . . . access is denied.' I'm signed in as the Administrator so I
don't get that part. Gives me some options, but I abort. Can't find any fixes
for this anywhere and the folks at DELL are clueless except to do a full
re-install which I would like to avoid. I've read about a conflict with
something called TvMedia. something, but It's not on the computer or I can't
find it. Is there an expert who can help? Thanks

Thanks to TaurArian for the suggestions which were very helpful - although I
don't have anything resembling Windows Resource Kits installed on this
computer. I opened regedit, found the .dvr-ms file, right clicked it - got a
warning that access is denied but you can look at it anyway (curious) changed
the permissions and restarted the computer. Tried the SP2 again. This time
made it almost all the way through before a message came up saying that
WinXPSP2 has encountered a problem and must close - something new added to
the soup. Now I haven't any idea what would cause this. No error message or
anything else. Any ideas?
