I have VS 2002 and have NOT installed XP SP 2 on my XP Professional system.
I seem to recall that SP 2 would mess up VS. Is this true?

Thank you...

In my opinion, it doesn't mess up VS.NET 2002, but 100% you will need to
re-install the .NET Framework.

I worked with Windows XP Professional SP2 + VS.NET 2002 for some weeks and
didn't experience any problems (I didn't use ASP.NET).

The previous reseponse stated that "100% you'll have to reinstall .NET
Framework. Did other experience this, namely ..NET Framework had to be
reinstalled?

Thanks...

I don't remember that I had to reinstall .NET 1.0 after installing Windows
XP SP2. I installed Windows XP SP2 /after/ installing VS.NET 2002.

When Microsoft released Service Pack 2, the XP message boards were full of
the same questions/errors. Microsoft did release a document stating that
after you install SP 2 you will need to re-install the .NET Framework.

I am just passing on the advice of what Microsoft originally said.

Do you have a source (link) for that?

I don't remember reinstalling the .NET Framework. All I did was installing
SP3 for .NET 1.0 that was published when XP SP2 came out:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3
<URL:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...61-4a92-4106-a9bc-83e78d4abc5b&displaylang=en>

| SP3 also provides support for Windows XP Service Pack 2
| to provide a safer, more reliable experience for customers
| using Windows XP.

Still, there /can/ be errors after installing Windows XP SP2, for example:

You receive an error message when you add a reference to a COM object in
Visual Studio .NET after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
<URL:http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;883608>

There are known problems with McAfee VirusScan, that can be solved by
installing a patch:

Patch 5 for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i
<URL:https://knowledgemap.nai.com/phpclient/viewKDoc.aspx?url=kb/kb_kb38717.xml&docType=DOC_KnowledgeBase>

Crouchie1998,
Do you have a link to alleged document?

As I have installed SP2 on 3 computers & did not need to re-install either
..NET 1.0 or .NET 1.1.

Thanks
Jay

Bruce,
I did not need to reinstall either .NET 1.0 (VS.NET 2002) or .NET 1.1
(VS.NET 2003) when I installed XP SP2.

I would be curious to see this alleged document that Crouchie1998 sites, to
see the specifics on when you need to re-install the framework.

Hope this helps
Jay

I would have to go into the XP forum & search for the SP 2/Framework issues.
That's where the link to the document is.

All I remember is that SP 2 corrupts the Framework & uninstalling then
reinstalling sorted out the problem.

Crouchie,
I would appreciate it if you looked! (seeing as you seen the document, you
would be able to recognize it quicker)...

As it would substantiate your claim, by providing the link to the document.

More importantly!!! I would expect the document states in what cases you
actually need to reinstall the framework, as I stated I installed SP2 on 3
separate computers & have not seen any need to reinstall the Framework.

I'm sure there are isolated cases where you need to. One such case sounds
like the COM object reference that Herfried stated, however I have not had
that problem...

I'm sure Bruce would also appreciate the specifics on when it has to & not
have to.

Thanks
Jay

Jay,

Maybe it is not so strange that you had not those problems (me either).

This link that is in Herfried message is about culture versions.

Maybe you use non English culture versions, however it is not so obvious.

In my opinion state it what Crouchie was telling.

Just the growing thread catched my curiosity

I hope this helps?

I didn't experience this either (German Windows XP Professional SP2 + German
VS.NET 2002). The problem seems to occur in some *rare* cases and can be
fixed by installing SP3 for the .NET Framework 1.0.

Cor,
Which is the article Herfried stated, that I referenced!

Also that article is very specific that you need to install the latest
service packs, I am current on the latest service packs. I really don't know
if I installed the .NET service packs before or after installing SP2.

The way I am reading Crouchie is that he is stating you need to reinstall
the entire Framework, the way I read the KB article you cited is that you
simply need to install the latest .NET SP.

I hope you agree there is an important difference between reinstalling the
entire Framework & simply installing a SP for the framework...

Thanks for the info
Jay

Or SP1 for .NET Framework 1.1.

I would strongly recommend installing the current SP for both frameworks (or
the specific framework you are running, if you don't have both loaded)
whether you are having this culture problem or not...

ACK.

Full ACK. That's why I installed the SP3 for the .NET Framework 1.0. I
didn't install it because I experienced any problems, I installed it to be
"up to date".
