As far as I know the only difference between SP1 and SP1a
is that SP1a does not contain the Microsoft (Java)
Virtual Machine. (For litigation reasons not technical
ones.)
Hello,
XP SP1 has now become XP SP 1a.The original release of
Windows XP did not ship with Java Virtual Machine, but a
copy of it is included in SP1. Now for the best bit:
Microsoft updated XP SP1 to version SP1a (Feb 2003) and the
only change they made was to remove the JVM again!
So there is no difference between the two except XP SP 1a
is without Java.
You download xp sp1a then download and install Java
Virtual Machine from

Well, I downloaded SP-1 and SP-1a and streamlined each into a copy
of XP, so I have XP with both SP-1 and SP-1a. Now that SP-1 has
been designed SP-1a are my two copies now the same? I also have XP
without either SP-1 or SP-1a. If SP-1 was actually SP-1a without java,
and SP-1a has some java, or did have not too long ago, then my SP-1 must
now be redesignated SP-1a due to the lack of java, and my SP-1a must
now be SP-1b because of the java. Of course, SP-1 and SP-1a should
not be confused with the SP-1 for MS Office.

The SP1 has the Microsoft [Java] Virtual machine - the SP1a does not
have any Java. Otherwise they are the same. Your statement that SP1a
did once have Java is incorrect.
