Can you start the computer in Safe Mode?

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn on the computer and start
tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until the Windows XP
Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

If it will start okay in Safe Mode then open Control Panel - System -
Advanced and click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery
(bottom) section.

In the Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for
"automatically restart" to clear it then click on Apply and OK as
needed to exit.

Also before starting the computer in Safe Mode download Stinger (free)
from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger on your other computer and save
the file to a 3.5 inch diskette. Then when you get Windows XP running
in Safe Mode insert the diskette and run Stinger. It will detect and
remove the most common of the current viruses.

Good luck

Do it again and this time write down everything repeat everything that
shows on the screen when that "some file address comes up" happens.

Post that complete information, just exactly as it appears on the
screen with no shortcuts or abbreviations, back here.

That will be a direct clue as to what has happened to your computer
and it may tell us how to help you to sort out the problem.

Good luck

My son's computer is having the same problem. It just started about an
hour ago. He was looking for music to play in Windows Explorer when it
started scrolling by itself, out of control, like the pageDown key was
stuck. He couldn't get it to stop so hit the reset button. Then the
computer just kept rebooting, so he called me to fix it for him.

I can use F8 to get to the screen for selecting "boot mode" but no
matter which one I select, it never finishes -- it just keeps
restarting after a few seconds. That is, I can't get it to boot into
SAFE mode or any other mode. I get the same list of files as Phil and
then a "blue screen" (that looks fake to me) says "Checking file
system on C:" and some other stuff that I can't remember now... then
it reboots itself.

HELP!!

I had the same problem... after an hour on the phone with the e-machines Tech
Rep we got the computer into the final stage of:

Windows could not start. The following file is missing or corrupted
\windows\system\vgaoem.fon.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the
original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

This came after we restored to the most recent setting that worked (however
it's worded in the startup area...)

The screen that Kam is referring to, I believe, says that one of the disks
needs to be checked for consistency... and it does so and proceeds to delete
corrupt files, truncate files, etc. The e-machines Tech Rep referred me to
KB 315338 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315338)

However, I'm at a loss as to how to get this fixed if I can't get my
computer booted up. The model I have does not come with an XP disk, only a
restore disk. I currently have the "bad" HD (with the corrupted windows
file) put into another computer as a slave so that I can try to salvage the
important files before I restore. I would like to know if there is a way to
solve the problem on the "bad" drive while it is still in the "good"
computer. The good computer doesn't have a floppy drive, only CD-RW and DVD,
so I'm not sure if I can make any type of boot drive.

Hi!

I have now been facing the same problem. So far not resolving it, but will
go on checking ...

The problem is not on mup.sys itself, but on some driver loaded in a second
or two after that ... Hard to say how to find/recognize the problem point,
maybe detaching some newly installed components and rebooting, or checking
the possible Stop Error details, or doing some other troubleshooting etc.,
and as a last hope action try to Repair install the Windows with a full
licence Retail CD.

Best regards,

Pete V.

As an update, when I took my computer in to get it serviced, they replaced
the hard drive and that supposedly worked. When I brought it home and
finally booted it up... no-go. Called the service techs back, brought my
computer back in, and they fiddled around with it some more. At some point,
my registry files had become totally corrupt... and they fixed it however
they fixed it. When I went back to pick it up, I also brought the memory
chip I had been trying to install in, and asked them to put it in for me.
After he installed it and booted up, POW! Same error. He quickly shut down
and removed the memory, and restarted, and it's worked fine since then. I
returned the memory to the company and had it replaced with a new one... I've
never heard of memory affecting the registry files, but I suppose anything is
possible. The new, replaced memory has been in since the day it came in the
mail, and I haven't had any problems.

Have kinde of same problem.
Mine loads windows fine, then about 2-3 sek, the power cuts and it reboots.
Safe mode workes fine, am writing this from it infact.
Tryed Ad-aware, and am now trying Stinger. but it found nothing ethier.
Trying to turn off the Auto-restart, if no word, then it's fine ;)
