I haven't got the complete answer to your question but a step towards it is this: XP automtically restarts the computer (automatic restart is set as default) everytime the system crashes

Go to the Control Panel (from the start menu), click on System and choose the advanced-flap. Click on the button "settings" where it says
"Start and repair
"Information about systemboot, system error and troubleshooting
(or something like that, I have Swedish version of WinXP
and there you can deactivate automatic reboot. So next time your computer crashes it will appear a blue screen and hopefully give you some more information about what can be wrong

.I HAVE WINDOWS XP ON A HP PAVILLION. WHEN I FIRST GOT
IT, IT WAS CYCLING AND REBOOTING. BUT IT STOPPED DOING IT.
THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THAT ON YOUR SHUT DOWN
COMPUTER MENU YOU ALSO HAVE RESTART. IT MUST BE READING
RESTART INSTEAD OF SHUT DOWN. I ALSO NEVER USE TO LOG OFF
PROPERLY AND WOULD GET MESSAGES THAT I HAD 5 PROGRAMS
RUNNING OR SOME OTHER NUMBER. NOW I LOG OFF BEFORE I SHUT
DOWN. WHEN YOU DO CLICK ON LOG OFF IT WILL TAKE YOU TO THE
SIGN-IN WINDOW. IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER IT WILL ASK SHUT
DOWN (NAME OF COMPUTER)WITH AN UNDERSCORE? YOU SHOULD SHUT
DOWN THERE. I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL.
