XP requests proxy for no reason

I have an XP client, IE 6, we use a proxy server for internet access. The
client's pc keeps popping up the proxy authentcation screen without him doing
anything. If he enters his credentials, nothing seems to happen (IE doesn't
open). Any idea of how to figure out what is trying to access the internet?

Done a scan for viruses, trojans and malware recently?
