I've been trying to recover xp for the past 26 hours. At
XP repair from CD stage I am asked for password and no
password is accepted. I don't want to reistall xp there is
too much at steak. When I try F8 "Last Known Good.."
restore I see Windows (default)and no OS option.

I have win98 on C: and XP on D: in perfect condition. All
i need is a boot sequence or command. If let the PC boot
sequence run it goes to please reinstall system32\hall.dll.
I already red all about documentation and it tells me
repair from CD and I have been going in a loop. Repair
asks for password...

Microsoft team couldn't make this opreation simpler? I am
stuck!!! You guys must have a solution.

thanks

The password that XP wants is the Administrator's password which is created
during the install process. If you installed XP then you did create a
password (even if it is a blank). If the system was setup by a local guru
check with same to find the correct password. Should you have a "massed
produced" system such as Dell, Gateway, etc. call India but your chances of
getting the PW are slim.

An alternative may be available. Sometimes this error occurs if the
boot.ini file has been damaged or is incorrect. If you had a dual boot then
the chances are quite good that the boot.ini file is actually on your Win98
drive. If you can find it this is actually just a text file which can be
corrected with notepad. There may even be a boot.bak file on the root of
your Win98 drive that has the correct information.

If you can not determine the Administrator's password nor find the boot.ini
then the only other alternative I see is a maintenance re-installation.
Which is installing XP over the top of its self. (This assumes your corrent
XP installation is on an NTFS disk/partition.) If you have SP2 installed
then this will not work with a previous XP installation disk - you will need
a slip-streamed disk to do the task. There is some potential for problems
when doing even a maintenance re-installation so this is the last option to
use short of a full format and re-install of the OS.

Good Luck,
Len
