xp reinstall won't complete

Hi, and thank you - I've tried to re-install windows xp from the original
authentic SP1 CD. It goes well until it cannot copy certain files; 5 are
..dll and 1 is . inf . I've skipped those and the set-up process just loops
(looking for them). If I retry the install it bombs out every time on those
5. They are avifil32, msvfw32, mindex, msisam11, and cryptui. All I want is
a secure return to a working XP !! Can anyone make this pensioner happy?

If your CD is scrached, dirty or your cd drive is dirty, it may cause this
problem. At most electronic stores or wal-mart or something, you can pick up
a kit for cleaning CD's and drives. They are only a few bucks, and this 'MAY'
help.

Usually when you get those sorts of errors, there is a hardware problem.
Yes, Tony is right that the disk may be scratched and that is the
easiest thing to check for. Look at it carefully and wipe any
fingerprints and smudges off with a soft cloth. Always wipe from the
inside out in radiating lines rather than around the disk in circles.
You can also try with someone else's cd that is the same version as
yours. If you still have problems, then most failures to install an
operating system are because of bad memory. You can test your memory
with a utility like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com. It is not
difficult to use. Depending on your tech skills, either download
the .iso image and burn to a cd-r or download the precompiled Windows
binary which will make a bootable floppy. Boot with the cd or floppy
and the test will run automatically. If you get errors, replace the
RAM. If the memory is OK, then test the hard drive with a utility from
the drive mftr.'s website.

If this sounds like more trouble than you want to go through, take the
machine to a good local computer repair shop - not a BestBuy or CompUSA
type of store.

Good luck,

Malke
