XP Professional - create restore point hangs

I discovered the problem when trying to install SP1 from CD.
Basically the process stops when it reaches the "Creating Restore
Point" point. However I can't create a restore point manually either.

I use the SP1 Set Up Wizard. It extracts all the files, backs up the
files and registry and then says " Creating Restore Point". It
rattles the disk for maybe a couple of seconds and then stops.

The machine is live - just sitting 100% in the idle process.

There is plenty of disk space and I've defragged it. Windows
Management Instrumentation is running. The user has administration
privileges. I've disabled all my anti virus software. There are no
error messages.

Any ideas?

You'll need to disable System Restore, reboot, the re-enable it. This will
clear all current restore points out along with the corruption that is
causing your problem.

Mike,

Your solution worked - many thanks. I had to do it twice - the first
time disabling the System Restore itself seemed to hang although
appearing to work. Trying to create a Restore Point then hung in the
usual way. A second go at disabling Sytem Restore went through and
terminated as expected. I was then able manually to create a restore
point and then the installation of SP1 ran through OK.

Again, many thanks.

No problem.
