XP Professional 2002

I just bought XP Professional 2002 for my MacPro, via boot camp, and in
installing this disk, I learned that in fact I'd bought a $200 upgrade..the
2002 version, apparently. Does this mean I need to go out and buy the 2000
version of Windows now too?

2k will likely be really expensive, however any NON-OEM 98 or newer OS is a
supported upgrade path and 98 can often be found for very little money while
2k licenses actually still retain quite a bit of value. But yes, you will
need another OS to upgrade from.

I'm not clear as to exactly what you're asking, but all versions of Windows
XP are 2002. There is no such thing as Windows XP 2000.

Or if you are concerned that you have an Upgrade version, but don't own a
qualifying product to upgrade from, there's no need for concern. Just buy an
inexpensive used copy of Windows 98 on eBay, and use that.

yeah, apparently I purchased an upgrade version, although from the box,
that's not clear at all...doesn't say "upgrade" anywhere I can see...

so I guess that means forking over another 200 or so for the full version of
XP. the intel macs are only running XP so I don't think I can install the
windows 98 disk. unless you're suggesting that from Win98, you can utilize
the XP2002 upgrade and be right as rain.

I know nothing about the Macintosh, but in general you *can* install an
upgrade version of Windows cleanly. Simply insert the Windows 98 (or other
qualifying version) CD as proof of ownership when prompted to do so.

I can't promise you this will work on a Macintosh, but if the Macintosh can
run Windows XP, I don't see why not.

All you need to do, I believe, is insert a W98 CD in the drive when
prompted.

Ah, so you're saying that using the Win98 CD will be enough to install the
full XP version that I already have? In other words, in the install screen
when it is asking me to insert the CD with the "fulll version" of windows, I
could use the Win98?

That would be great, as I imagine getting a version of that should be pretty
cheap.
thanks for help...you might have to deal with more of us mac guys now that
we're all using (more or less) the same hardware.

I'd be a little more skeptical with low-end eBay purchased 2k licenses.
Mainstream support for 2k has indeed ended though extended support lasts
until July 13, 2010 though I did look and there are some cheap listings for
2k at eBay. Extended support for 98/ME ended earlier this year.
