Hi, open up control panel, goto system, click devices, click device
manager, now go down to sounds, click the plus next to sounds, and
double click on whatever is underneath sounds, if there are more than
one click the top one, click the button that says update driver and let
it connect to the internet to find a driver. this may take a few
minutes and may require a reboot afterwards. make sure your volume isnt
muted by double clicking the speaker icon on the bottom right of the
screen.

Flamer.

Did you reinstall the drivers for you computer???
if you did a clean install (I think is the way you did) you need to download
the drivers from the website of your computer manufacturer
What kind of computer you own????

there is no system thing in control panel that i can see

What Flamer is sugesting is go to the device manager:
click in start - go to my computer and right click here - other window
beside will open and select properties - go to Hardware tab - click in device
manager - device manager will open and select>>> now do what Flamer
sugest.....something else...is there a yellow icon with this sign ( ! )
that mean you need to download the drivers
You computer came with a set of disk, probably 3 or 4 one contain the drivers

I myself had to do a clean re-install of Win XP Pro. I had the same/similar
problem. This is what I did......... I have an onboard (built into the
motherboard) sound card. I had to load the sound drivers off of the disk
that came with the motherboard before my speakers and microphone worked. If
you don't have the disk, you can download the drivers from the website of the
motherboards manufacture.

If the sound card is a separate card that you plug into the slots of the
motherboard, chances are you'll have to get the sound card disk and load the
drivers........or from the net......etc.

Warning...............if you intend on doing this after the family goes to
bed................make sure the speakers are turned down!!!!!!! (speaking
from experience)

Install the correct and/or updated sound drivers for your sound card.
