xp pro // xp home won't talk

R

Ray

New to your group and helping a friend.

The pro has 2 nics. One runs the internet. Setup the home (the newer
computer)to share the internet on the integrated card. The internet
works great.

1st tried ICS (it assigned the standard: 198.162.0.1 but the pro
didn't get an address)then 2 static with 10.0.0.1 & .5 w/
255.255.255.0

I went into services, with the static, and "stopped" NAV & the ICS
thing.

Looked at advanced properties of TCP/IP and ip filtering is allowing
"all."

I turned on Zone Alarm and stangely I could see the 10.0.0.5 (pro)
ping the .1 (home) but on the pro I keep getting a "timed out"
message.

Both the little computer "lights" by the clock show the connection
active. Green lights on the Netgear nics are on also.

Any ideas would be great.

My friend want to copy his files then "boat anchor" is 98 machine.

First of all, I suggest you buy a router and drop the ICS which is often
problematic.
Then utilize DHCP which assigns internal IP's automatically.
Another big plus is the built in firewall in the router. Also, neither
machine need be running for the other to access the Internet.

Routers are very cheap these days. - particularly if you don't need to be
wireless.
