Hi. I have a Micron Millenia Pentium III that I recently upgraded to
Windows XP. When I choose "Turn Off Computer", it plays the sound, clicks,
turns off the system power light, but stays on. I have to use the power
button to make it really go off. It starts afterwards normally.

I did a full install of XP, wiping out everything on drive C:. Then I ran
Windows Update and took all the "Critical" and "Driver" updates. One driver
was for the video board, an nVidia Riva TNT2 Pro.

I did several system restarts to load all the updates, so I'm not sure
whether I could ever do the shut down. The troubleshooter suggests that new
video drivers can cause this behavior, but I rolled that back and I still
have the problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks, all.

It's possible your computer is not ACPI compliant.

Check to see in Control Panel/Power Options if you have a tab for "APM". If
so, you need to enable APM. This will turn off power to the powersupply and
turn off your PC when you shutdown.

That tab is not there. So does that mean it isn't ACPI compliant (or thinks
it isn't)? I was able to power off through software in Windows 98...

(By the way, thanks for the quick reply. Should have said that the last
time.)

I'm sending this message from another computer, which powers off just fine.
The APM tab is missing here, too. (I do have a tab called "Advanced".) I'm
running pretty new versions of XP. Is it possible that this utility has
changed?

If you don't have the APM tab, it just means your system may be ACPI
compliant. You can check in Control Panel/System/Hardware then Device
Manager. Expand "Computer" and you should see an ACPI entry.

I only suggested this since one of my computers had this issue and it wasn't
ACPI but had the APM tab. I enabled APM and the computer would shutdown and
power off.

That is a good site. Haven't licked it yet, but I'm getting there. Thanks.

Hey, LAB4, welcome here. It is indeed a good site, not just that
page, but the rest of the site too.
