XP Pro vs Media Center OS

I'm considering a new laptop for business use, I network at the office with
many machines on the network. I belive XP Home is only good for 4 items on
the network while XP Pro is good for many. What's the story with the Media
Center, is that XP PRo on steroids or the Home edition?

Thanks.

If you intend to join a domain (see you network administrators for more
information) and you intend to use your laptop "for business use" then you
need Windows XP Professional.
That functionality is removed from Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Media Centre Edition is XP Pro with most the the networking features (aka
domain connecting) remove and enhanced multi-media added (for TV,DVD,MP3).

You can't join a domain with MCE but you can join a workgroup for
networking. That's what I do.
If you don't know what you're using domain/workgroup just ask your admin.

I'm not sure what you mean by "good for 4 items on the network
while XP Pro is good for many," but XP Professional allows ten
concurrent network connections, and Home only five. It sounds
like you probably need Professional.

Media Edition is Professional with extra features.

MCE2005 is Home based.

See: Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
to
a work network or domain? at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx

MCE 2005 is Professional based but with reduced functionality post MCE
install.
You CAN join a domain during the initial install but this will break other
functionality such as the use fo Extenders etc.

The FAQ is written from a home users perspective of taking delivery of a pre
installed machine - that may not be the case in other environments.

No - it is Pro with the exception of not providing for joining a domain.
I understand it is possible to set that up - once for all - if you do so
after the Pro install phase but before running the MCE additions. And
it will not be lost if you use it to upgrade MCE 2004
