I am going to reinstall Windows AGAIN and this time was wondering if I
should upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro or wait until Longhorn comes out (I've
read it should be out next year sometime). Any words of wisdom?

Probably the end of next year.

Why do you want to upgrade to XP Pro? They are the same in the core
functions. Is there something in pro you need specifically that's not
in home?

If you don't have a specific reason to move to Pro, stick with what you've
already got. You could wait years for Vista.

Upgrading do Windows XP Professional is pointless unless you are business user.
"Longhorn" (or the new version of Windows) would be out probably at the end
of next year but most new "softwares and OS" have bugs in them ,so upgrade to
the new version when the SP 1 of the new OS is available.

I have a home network setup and XP Home doesn't seem to have some of the
security features I am used to from an "NT" perspective like file/folder
permissions etc. I know how to "hide" the folders on the network, but would
still like to grant permissions for them as well for added security. I know,
nothing is 100% safe adn secure, but I have been having LOTS of security
issues lately (i.e. viruses, pop-ups etc) and YES I do have up-to-date AV
software!

Thinking about Longhorn? Keep in mind, device drivers. Havin
experimented with the 32-bit Beta version of Windows Vista, Buil
5219 (codename Longhorn), I find that while my printer drivers stil
work the same can not be said for other devices such as scanners, we
cams, TV Tuner cards, and such. Hopefully Microsoft will include man
more device drivers in the final version of this OS, yet this stil
leaves us at the mercy of the device manufacturers--will they provid
updated drivers? Certainly not in all cases

Please consider the rapid advances that are occurring in computer
technology these days. With the advent of 64 bit computing, dual core
processors, SLI and PCI Express, new memory technologies, etc, etc, etc,
- I'd recommend waiting until the technology matures before committing
to valuable upgrades.

As for the Pro vs Home debate - there isn't that much of a difference
between the 2 and there are lot's of workarounds available to compensate
for most of the differences.

To access these features in Home boot into safe mode and login to the
built in Administrator account.

Reboot keep in mind that Vista (formerly called Longhorn) is only in the
Beta 1 phase of development. Device manufacturer's are not going to be
making drivers widely available until the OS is close to being released to
the public. BTW Microsoft doesn't write drivers. They ask device
manufacture's if they wish to have their drivers included but the device
manufacturer has the right to not do so.

Hello Harry:

Your point is well taken. Certainly, I am looking forward to moving up
to Vista someday, and when that day comes I’ll simply deal with the
device driver situation one item at a time.

Cheers,

With the exception of certain specific features and functions that are
part of XP Pro but which are not found in XP Home the two versions are
*identical* and they are both compiled from the same source code base.
In particular there is zero difference in performance or stability
between the two versions unless the computer has dual CPUs on the
motherboard.

You'll most propably be waiting until (even into) 2007 before Pista is
released. Stick with Home until then, unless you really need to use
something like GP Editor.
