XP Pro using 2 CALs on server when accessing files

I have a customer who has a windows server 2000 and multiple XP Pro PC's.
There is a program running on the PC for monitoring their usage, and it
reports back to the server. This program only runs when a user logs in.
The server is showing up asecond connection form the XP Pro PC from the user
"PCNAME$", PCNAME being whatever the name of the users PC is.

Is this something in XP I can change to get it to stop this second
connection as they're running out of CALs.

I would have thought the program would just be seen as the user accessing
more files, not a second user.

DO I need to set the program to run a different way?

Both users and computers authenticate to a domain. If you have enough user
or device/seat CALs for your network, you don't need to worry about this.
Most people stop & disable the built-in license logging service, and keep
track of licenses manually (you'll be presumed to be in per seat/device mode
if you do this).

If your monitoring software is reporting problems with CALs just because
you see a user & a computer authenticating, there's something wrong with the
software.

The licensing service is complaining of not enough CALs for the amount of
people connecting to it, even though there 15 CALs, 14users with PC's, but 28
seperate connections being seen to exist.
The software is not generating the CAL warning, I think it is causing it by
making the PC be seen as another connection.

Will turning off the licensing service cause an issue with Server?

No - as mentioned, most people I know just stop & disable that service when
they configure a server to begin with. It's buggy and isn't mandatory. And
you will be presumed to be in 'per seat' mode, then, so make sure you have
as many CALs as you have connecting/authenticating computers, and keep them
all together on paper somewhere safe.

I still suspect that your monitoring software has some problems, but see if
they go away when you stop the service.
