XP Pro upgrade from DOS safe mode?

My computer is running Win 2000 Pro. It won't boot
because files have been damaged and I don't have the CD.
I purchased a Win XP Pro upgrade, but I can't get to the
Windows desktop.

Can I do the upgrade from the DOS safe mode prompt?

THanks.

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Place your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive.
3. Reboot your computer and Windows XP will begin the installation
(you'll see a message to 'press any key' to boot to the CD).
4. Select the "Upgrade Option" and not the "New Installation" option.
