xp-pro Task manager

I am running xp-pro with sp2.

When pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and selecting task manager, the system just
goes back to the desktop. Task manager never comes up.

Any answers??

This is a sign of a virus (but may not be the only answer)
Does "msconfig and regedit do the same thing?"

I checked msconfig and regedit, they seem to be fine. I also found that I can
run taskmgr as a RUN command. It just does not work from the button.
