When I start XP Pro a small screen pops up named "Windows File Protection" -
I says:'Please wait whilst Windows verifies that all protected Windows files
are intact and in their original versions' It then starts scanning the
files with a blue progress bar showing how far it's got.-- I can cancel this
but - My question is - should I allow it to do the full scan each time
Windows starts ? (It takes ages ) and how do I prevent it popping up each
time ? Any help will be appreciated.

John, try going to Start>Run type: sfc /revert That should stop
sfc ( System File Checker ) from running on each startup.

Until you allow it to go through to completion, it will start over again
next time. Let it complete,, getting the system in shape, and it should
not happen again (unless you have serious troubles)
