XP Pro SP2 Install Does Not Finish

My laptop has an OEM version of Windows XP Pro. I need SP2 in order for a
certain app to run.
When I install SP2, it seems to go through the process, OK. But, towards the
end, after installing files, it says "Running processes after Install." It
just sits there..it hasn't really crashed, because i can move the mouse
around, but it just stays there and the progress bar never moves.
The laptop already has Norton Internet Security installed, but I disabled it
prior to installing SP2.
Does anyone know why this may be happening and how I can get past it?

Difficult to tell what is going on.
Perhaps some type of malware.
You mentioned, NIS, is it updated within the last few days and have you run
it just before attempting to install SP-2?
Have you checked for spyware?
