XP Pro reboot problem after installing any software

I did a clean install of XP Pro over the weekend on my new computer
(built myself).

I installed XP Pro, then installed SP2 from CD, then connected to the
Internet to activate XP and get all the latest patches.

I then began to install all the software on to my new computer that had
been on my dead one. On the first re-boot after any software install,
the computer hangs. I see the XP logo with the progress bar beneath.
Sometimes this progress bar just freezes after a short time. Most of
the time, though, it just keeps going, and going, and going. I can let
it sit like this for about 15 minutes and the boot never finishes. I
see no disk activity on my hard drive during this time.

If I hit the reset button to get out of this "loop", then on the next
boot XP gives me the me "Sorry for the inconvenience ..." message and
gives me boot choices like safe mode, last good config, start normally,
etc. If I select last good config, it boots fine (most of the time).
Then after that it's fine on a reboot. It only seems to have problems
after a new software install.

When I look through service messages, the only flags I see are about
message 1517 which has something to do with printing and some kind of
Image Writer. I'm sorry I don't recall the exact content of that
alert.

I hope I've provided enough information for someone to begin to give me
a clue.

Thank you!

Bruce

Just one question: Which program did you load just before your problem
occurred?

Unfortunately, I don't recall. Most likely, it was Norton Anti-Virus,
Zone Alarm, or Content Protect, as they were among the first I
re-installed after the OS and all updates. I don't recall because at
first I thought the problem was due to something else and it took a
while for me to recognize that it occurred after an install. Last
night I installed some more software and didn't really have too much
trouble. I need to gather some more data and look more closely to see
if I can find any other clues about when this happens.

I'll take closer note of what eventvwr tells me, too.

Thanks!
