XP Pro probs

I posted this here to see if anyone had Ideas.
Here are my system spec:
P4 2.53 gig cpu
SY-P4S-645DX DRAGON Ultra
512 ram
100 gig WesternDigital harddrive
ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128
Windows XP Pro, all packs and updates.
now I have a problem that keeps happening. When I start
up the comp every 2 or 3 times if starts chkdisk.
sometimes it finds no probs sometimes it says files were
missing or links to files are bad or bad indexes etc. you
know it flashes the problem so quick and goes to windows.
Well I have reinstalled windows 8 or 9 times. I have done
Fat 32 and NTFS. and I still get it. The last time I had
to reinstall windows my problem was the comp would start
but nothing would execute when you clicked on it. Now it
is working fine other than the chkdisk is starting again.
As a matter of fact it did just this last time I booted
the comp. Any ideas? is it mobo?I don't know what else to
do short of buying new hardware.
I may not see any answers be cause my comp just went thru
heck to get ack running this last time. It rebooted 3
times and did checkdisk each time. It is getting worse. I
am using a new Harddrive just reinstalled windows on the
8th of this month. This last time it also would not
execute when I clicked on Icons. I rebboted and it worked
I dont know how. i have all updatees and service packs.
Sorry this is so long.
I was hoping you may have an idea or two. any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Begin at the beginning: Check out your hardware:

1. Make sure your CPU and case temperatures are OK.

2. Shut down your computer and turn off power *at the
surge protector* (which cuts off standby power while
leaving your computer grounded) or unplug it. Take
the standard protections against static electricity
(wear a wrist strap or keep one hand grounded at all
times).

3. Open up your computer and and make sure all your CPU
and case fans are working. Then dust it out. *Do not
use a vacuum cleaner* - it might cause static discharge.
Get some dust remover spray (RadioShack has it) and
a dust mask, and take your computer outside and spray
out the dust. Keep the end of the spray straw at least
six inches from any components and keep it moving so as
to avoid excessive thermal shock to the components.

4. Reseat all the modules and cables inside your computer.

5. Clear CMOS (see your mainboard manual for how to
do it) and set up your BIOS again.

6. Run "memtest86" (download from http://www.memtest86.com)
to thoroughly check out your memory. You should get
zero errors.

7. Run a full set of hardware diagnostics. ("diag378.exe",
downloadable from ftp://ftp1.dell.com/diags, after a few
complaints, will run on most non-Dell computers.)
You should get zero errors.

There are many possibilities so these are just things you might try...

1) are you running a 40 or 80 connector data cable? Most moern drives ATA
66 or above require the 80?

2) have you completely removed the data cable you are using and replaced
it - could be bad cable?

3) what is your power supply - less than a very good 350watt can be a
problem?

4) if you have a good power supply try connecting your HD to a different
power connector.

5) (but may be the #1 problem) have you tried different memory? Try a copy
of Memtest32 or simular and see if there are any errors. If you have 2
sticks of ram try removing one and doing start-up shutdown a couple times.
If same problem persists try the 2nd stick by its self.

It could be many other things including CPU and MB, but these are a bit less
painless (costly) than swapping those two components out!

Good Luck,
Len
