I have an Acer netbook with xp. I need xp pro so I can log into a work
network occasionally. I have an old xp pro upgrade that was on a machine I
had, that has long ago been destroyed. Can I use it, or can I buy one and
use it on my netbook? Can I get updates from Microsoft or is xp and xp pro
no longer supported? TIA, Paul

Can't speak to the licensing issue, but I've got Pro running on
my Asus eeePC 901 and it's getting regular updates just fine.

If the upgrade was a retail version, sure you can upgrade your netbook
to pro. You'll likely have to reformat and install fresh though. XP
will keep receiving patches into 2014 if I remember right.

If its a retail upgrade version you should be good to go.
MSUpdate still functions (Do NOT update drivers from there)

Although you need XP Pro to join a domain, XP Home is more than capable of
logging into a network. Have you tried? Just change the workgroup name to
the domain name. See:

http://smallvoid.com/article/winnt-home-domain-share.html

(The server needs to have your logon and password, too.)

Actually you don't even need to change the Workgroup name from your home
workgroup name. As long as the server has your XP log-on name and password
in it's database you can use a batch file to do a NET USE X:
\\SERVERNAME\FOLDER to enable you to connect to the server's location.

If you aren't automatically connected it will ask for a user name and when
you hit enter it will ask for the logon password. Use this feature and/or
batch files many times with the machine I am on right now to the network I
am attached to right now.

Thanks for the info.

So I risk having driver problems if I upgrade to an XP Pro upgrade CD from
2004? But there must be benefits that XP Pro would provide. I have plenty
of disk space, but maybe my 1 gb of memory would be a problem? So if you
can tell me how to avoid driver problems, I'd like to do it. Please
encourage me!

No, that's highly unlikely

But there must be benefits that XP Pro would provide.

That's also highly unlikely. Are you aware that XP Home and
Professional are identical except that Professional includes a few
features (mostly related to security and networking) missing from
Home? Most home users don't need and would never use these extra
features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

For details go to

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp>

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note another point, not included in any of the above:
Professional allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only
five.

I have plenty
of disk space, but maybe my 1 gb of memory would be a problem?

And once more, highly unlikely. If it's enough for you with XP Home,
it will almost certainly remain enough for XP Professional. Moreover
how much RAM you need for good performance under XP depends on what
apps you run, and for most home users who don't run memory-hungry
apps, 1GB is already more than sufficient.

No all he was saying was don't use the drivers that Microsoft Update
offers. Windows XP Home and Pro both use the same drivers, so what you
have now on your PC will work with Pro just fine.
