I have recently re-installed our main file server that provides access to a
central file storage. Previously any computer on the network could access
this with the username and password (It was asked for when accessing the
computer in my network places) of the main account but now access is freely
given without a login box appearing ? I have been through all the sharing any
security settings and cannot understand why this happens. Has any body got
any idea of how to turn this simple security feature on ?

The server is XP Pro, what about the other computers? If you've enabled the
Guest account for network access, or if you've enabled a non-Guest account for
network access, and are using that account from the other computers (also XP
Pro), then this is correct behaviour.

If you want the other computers to always demand a user name and password,
disable Guest and change the password on the non-Guest account.
