Ok, I have a really wierd problem that doesn't make any
sense, and I need some new tips to try to solve it.
Toshiba Laptop with wireless and wired NIC is connected
to a netgear vpn router (FVS318). Running XP SP1. All
internet access works except http. DNS resolves, ftp
works, telnet works, just no http in mozilla or in IE6
(sp1). Pardon me, no external http works. Internal http
works fine. So I figure its a problem with the router.
Except I bring over my laptop and hook it up and http
works fine. Both are on XP SP1. I don't understand why
it works for one computer and not the other one.
So I'm look back to the Toshiba laptop. No firewall
software is installed. Windows firewall is off. No
TCP/IP filtering. No changes to hosts file. Try a
different static IP, no change so back to dynamic, try
wired NIC and wireless NIC individually but external http
is still being blocked. IE always says, website found
but then hangs.
I looked at the proxy setting in IE but it wasn't
configured. It is also set to not to autodetect the
connection, to never connect and to use the existing
Network. (It doesn't make sense for it to be an IE
specfic setting since mozilla fails too).
Now I'm really wondering what is going on, so I took the
machine to my place and hooked it to my network viola! it
works with no changes. huh?!
so I went back to the netgear router and reset all the
settings to start it from scratch. I just put in the
basic internet connection and DHCP on a default
192.168.0.x subnet and still got the same problem. And
all the while, my machine works fine.
So now I'm really frustrated. What else can I try
without rebuilding the machine? Do I rebuild the TCP/IP
Stack? Something has to be blocking it when its
connected to this one router (not network cause I've
tried using both 10.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x on the router),
but I can't figure it out.
Thanks for any tips,
Dave
