Finally got this figured out. Thought I'ld write it down. Maybe it will help
someone.

xp pro to xp pro (home network)
When you want to access the other computer on your network, and it asks for
name and password, but you haven't set it up for name and password, and dont
want it, follow these steps

Click on start > login > guest (grayed out because its not activated) and
activate guest.

Next,

Control panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local
Policies > User Rights Assignment > Deny access to this computer from the
network (13th down in righthand column). Double click on "deny access to
this computer" and remove only one word "Guest" (repeat remove only the word
"Guest"). Done, close up everything. You can now access the other computer
on your network. Done this three times on different computers. Works.

But does this not mean that you only have "guest" rights on the machine
you are accessing?

Rifleman,
I asked on this forum "how do I get rid of user name and password popup
box?" and got, "uncheck simple file sharing, or enter in correct user name
and PW" ect. None were the correct answers for me. But after extensive
reading and trial and errors, I got something that worked finally.

I do not know what "only have guest rights" means. I believe by removing the
word "guest" in "deny access" gave full rights to all shared folders.

Ie you have VERY limited access.

have you checked that, 'cos I'd be very interested in the results!
