XP Pro machines in same Workgroup on same subnet cannot see each other

I've been here, done this before and thought I had it all
figured out, but, am having problems once again ... I've
recently added a new XP Pro laptop to a home LAN (wired
broadband router subnet) and am seemingly unable to
establish NetBEUI connectivity between it and my other XP
Pro / Win 98 machines - which all see each other just
fine on the same subnet using NetBEUI.
My new laptop's fundamental network configuration
parameters are identical to my pre-existing XP Pro
workstation and the new laptop has TCPIP connectivity to
the internet, no problem.
So, assuming my Network Connections > (adapter) >
Properties > Services & Protocols configurations are not
the issue, I am looking to other factors as the source of
my difficulty.
I've shared out some folders on the new laptop (simple
file sharing imnplemented) and it sees its' own Workgroup
(but no other connected member machines). I have the
Guest account enabled (no password) in Administrative
Tools > Computer Management and turned On in
Administrative Tools > User Accounts.
Should I be looking at changing the startup parameter of
a Service in Administrative Tools > Services?

Thanks but I prefer my security over convenience.

TCP/IP isn't insecure. And if you use it for the Internet
connection, then you're using it anyway.

Your broadband router most likely has a firewall or the NAT
function built in, so there aren't many security worries left,
short of a user opening a bad mail attachment, and NetBEUI
doesn't help there either.

In short, I concur with Jetro. Use the opportunity to flee
forward and get rid ot NetBEUI.
