XP Pro logon screen appears twice - is this a trojan?

Suddenly my logon screen is appearing twice: I have to put in the username
and password in both times to log on to my XP Pro system (in a domain). I'm
a bit worried that a trojan has stolen the name and password, but googling
hasn't produced anything and the virus scan (McAfee) shows nothing.

If the OS prevents anything except the proper login running when I press
Ctrl/Alt/Del, then perhaps the second appearance is a trojan? However I
have to put in the correct name and password the second time. (Of course it
could be a clever trojan that has collected the credentials the last time I
logged in and is checking against them).

Anyone seen this? Should I (groan) reinstall the OS? Or can I ignore it?

Have you tried scanning for any viruses? Go to trendmicro.com and
search sysclean. That method is a pretty thorough exam on your files.
Try it, and see if it found anything. Also, follow the instructions,
run it in safe mode for best results.

The problem seems to have gone away after a reboot, so perhaps it was just a
false alarm.
