XP Pro hangs upon restart

Hi,

I've read some posts on various aspects of problems with WinXP hanging under
various situations, but I am not sure how exact those issues are to mine.

Recently whenever the computer restarts, after Window's System updates or
during a forced restart during a program installation, the system exits
properly and seems to reboot normally, but the screen goes black after the
WinXP logo appears and the system remains inoperable until I physically turn
off and restart, which always proceeds without any problem.

My system is a P4, running XP sp2, with 512 MB of RAM.

Thanks for any advise.

Hi, Jerry,

I did as you suggested and it worked, but I am baffled as to why simply
booting in safe mode should do anything. When I did so, no errors occurred,
so I rebooted in normal mode and tired restarting a few times and each time
it worked.

If some error had been uncovered, I could understand it.

I am often mystified by computers, but thanks for the help!

Check Event Viewer for errors in Application and System logs; right
click My Computer, Manage, Event Viewer.

I suspect you may have had a corrupt or missing system file that was
corrected automatically by Windows File Protection.
