Will xp full verson do a upgrade? like the upgrade verson will, or do you
have to use the upgrade verson ONLY to be able to upgrade? I have a computer
that has ME on it, system has gotten messed up but still works kinda, OEM
disks are gone for this computer, so I can not reload from them. I need to
buy new OS. I want to save programs that are already in the system. so I want
to upgrade at this point but if something else happens to this machine again
I will want to wipe the the drive and start fresh.

Rick;
Yes the full version will perform an upgrade exactly the same as an upgrade
version.
Also an upgrade will perform a Clean Installation the same as full version
except the upgrade will ask for qualifying media be inserted for a few
minutes.

Yes. But don't confuse the full version with an OEM version,
which will *not* do an upgrade.

If you own Me, you qualify for the Upgrade version and that's
what you should buy, since it's cheaper than the Full version..
It contains everything that the Full version does, and can do
both an Upgrade *and* a clean installation.

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous
qualifying version's installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see
below), not to have it installed. When setup doesn't find a
previous qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to
insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the previous
version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds quite
normally and quite legitimately.
You can also do a clean install if you have an OEM restore CD of
a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it
*can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP
upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.

Thanks for the info:
As I put in the orig. post, the problem is my machine has ME & office prem.
on it. ME has been damaged, but still working. my restore disk for ME & my
office disks were stolen( somebody needed them more the I do) I need to buy
new OS, my concern is, with out the orig restore disks anymore should I buy
full or upgrade of XP pro. If I ever lose the drive I will lose Office Prem.
I am aware of that, but if that happens I will not be able to reload XP
upgrade back on the machine without the OEM restore disks. Correct?

sTo throw more into the mix:
I have an old full verson of 98 CD. If I buy XP pro upgrade and I lose this
drive and have to rebuild, will XP upgrade do a new install using my 98 disk??

Is there any way of saving my office2000 prem. without the orig disks?

I say the disk were stolen because I dont want to believe I was stupid
enough to lose them. I paid over $400 for office. Its a 50-50 thing. I may
have just lost them.

As long as the Windows 98 CD is readable and is a full Windows 98 CD (not a
recovery CD), it qualifies for the XP Upgrade CD.

As for Office, you can not copy the installed version. If you still have
proof of purchase and the Office CD key, you might be able to see if
Microsoft could "sell" you replacement media CDs.

Almost correct. You can always buy a used copy of Windows 98 or
Me. That, along with the XP Upgrade, will still be considerably
cheaper than the Full version of XP.

Yes. Then there's no need to buy a copy, as I just suggetsed in
another post in this thread.

Sorry, no.

It is a orig MS 98 CD, that should work then!!!!!
next question: Once I get this drive strighten out and running, is there a
way to copy the complete drive to anyother drive for a backup?.

back in 98 days the OEM's sent Orig MS 98 retail CDs, I have mine. so XP pro
upgrade would reinstall if I lost the whole system, correct? This problem
seems to be answered.
Once I get this OS thing strighten out and everything is running correctly
again, Is there some way to copy the complete drive to another drive as a
back up?

There are several pieces of software that will do this: Ghost,
Drive Image, True Image, etc.
